At this time last year, basketball in OKC was in the dark. The franchise had a very uncertain future. After missing the playoffs for the first time in five seasons, the ‘Peake was a dark and quiet place last playoffs. Kevin Durant had a major injury, and his future was very uncertain. The entire team had so many injuries. Scott Brooks was fired in the offseason, and things were seemingly falling apart in Oklahoma City. Russell Westbrook seemed to be the only bright spot of the entire season, going beast mode and trying to make the playoffs, but failed.
Fast forward to this year, the Thunder hired Billy Donovan as their new head coach, and haven’t looked back since. Although the Thunder have faced three tragedies this year of Monty Williams wife, Ingrid dying in a car wreck, Dion Waiters brother getting shot, and part owner, Aubrey McClendon also died in a car wreck. But that did not seem to stop the Thunder in the midst of adversity. The Thunder finished with a 55-27 record on the season, good enough to get the three seed in a top loaded West. The beginning of the year had some growing pains with the new coach, but which team doesn’t. Kevin Durant has looked great, and does not look like he lost a step from his major injury. Westbrook was back at it, putting up monster stats of 18 triple doubles and making a case for himself as MVP.
The first round of the playoffs will feature the Dallas Mavericks. The team does have a lot of experience, and the always deadly Dirk, but the Thunder should and will win the series. The real test will come in the second round, where they will likely play the Spurs unless something drastic happens. The Thunder are fully capable to beat the Spurs as they have shown in the past. The Thunder need to come out firing on all cylinders. They cannot let up and make a lot of mistakes. The Thunder need to realize the time to win a championship is NOW. Not just for Kevin Durant to stay, but for Oklahoma City. The fans deserve it. They cheer their heart out every single game for the Thunder in hopes of a championship.
The time is NOW! Pull together Thunder fans. Come together and be a community. WE ARE ONE. Do not forget that. We are the best fans in the NBA. Do not let anyone forget that we are Loud City. Cheer on your boys like you have never cheered before. We need and deserve a championship and the time is now.
