Since he who will not be named left the Thunder there have been all kind of talks on who will take his place as the starting small forward for the team. All kinds of names can be thrown out there but one thing is for sure, the starting small forward for OKC is already on the team right now. Do not expect the Thunder to make any major free agent moves going forward and the chances of trading Russell Westbrook are slim. A team would have to throw the chest at the Thunder and that team must get a promise from Russ that he will stay with them next season.
The Thunder have the roster that they are going to take in to next season and, fans, that means one thing, no Rudy Gay to the Thunder. Many Thunder fans all-around have been throwing that idea out there since Gay has been placed on the trading block then Sam Presti should attempt to bring him to the team. It is hard to argue against Gay when all you look at is his stats. He averages 18.4 points on 45% shooting for his career. Gay also averages 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game.
All of that sounds fine and dandy but here is the problem, Gay has only been on one team that has gone to the playoffs and in those playoffs they lost in the first round. Gay has been called out for his attitude throughout his career by analyst and players such as Jason Terry. It seems that whatever team Gay has been on, while he has been able to be individually successful, he does not fit in with the team. Something about him makes it to where his can form no team chemistry. That is something that is important to the Thunder in their game play.
Look at the team that Sam Presti has developed, they are all players who seem to be great friends on and off the court. Also all the players are willing to give everything for each other. It is hard to expect Gay to fit in with players of those attitudes. Could never see him dancing with Payne and Westbrook or growing a ‘stache with Adams and Kanter.

Another issue with bringing Gay to the Thunder is that it would not do much for the team in the long run. This is a team that just lost a major asset and now needs to figure out how to be successful in the present while also retooling for the future. Any move to acquire Gay would require them to give up some of their good young assets, also does adding Gay to the team this year put them in championship contention? Doubtful.
The Thunder need to bring to build a team around Russell Westbrook. A team that is full of players who can space the floor or players who can gather some rebounds. Westbrook is the man in OKC now, give him the pieces that he needs to be successful.
