Thunder power forward Mitch McGary has been suspended for the first five games of the season. McGary failed a drug test test for marijuana usage. This is not the first drug test for McGary, either. McGary was facing a year long suspension in college basketball and that is why he decided to come out of college so early. He was not going to waste an entire year in college doing nothing.
Reports are also saying that this is the third failed drug test for McGary since he has entered the NBA. According to NBA rules the suspension comes after two other punishments. The first punishment is simply entering into the NBA’s Marijuana Program and the second punishment is a $25,000 fine. If McGary continues to fail drug tests then his suspensions will increase five more games every time, so a fourth failed drug test is a ten game suspension, a fifth is a fifteen games, and so on.
When asked about his suspension McGary had this to say, “I clearly made a mistake and for that I apologize to the organization, my teammates, and our fans. I realize there are only so many opportunities given to you and I need to make sure that as a person and as a player, I take accountability and ensure that this does not happen again.”
The problem with those words from McGary is that they mean nothing if he continues to make these mistakes. He has had plenty of chances to correct himself and he has failed to do that. Hopefully this suspension shows McGary the cold hard truth and puts him in line moving forward.
