Dear Kevin Durant,
We all know the playoffs are over for OKC. It was not the best season for the Oklahoma City Thunder but this season was a work in progress. We all hope you realize that every move this team has made in the past eight seasons has been about you. The team is doing their best to give you the team you need to win a championship. That is all that us fans want, Kevin. We want to see you lead this team to the ultimate victory because you deserve it.
You have been with the city of Oklahoma City since it first became an NBA home. You gave us light and hope. You showed us the way to victory. You proved that an NBA superstar can be humble, down to earth, and love his mother. Even though you have already done so much for this team and this city we all hope that you stay on with the team for the rest of your career. You are the face of our franchise. You are Oklahoma City.
The journey to this point has not been easy and it is only going to get harder but one thing is for sure, as long as you are a member of the Thunder the city will support you for everything that you are. No matter what is said or done we will be behind you. One thing we hope you realize is that we have our flaws, we make our mistakes, but we can get over them together. You should have never been called “Mr. Unreliable” by The Oklahoman. That was a mess up and it will never happen again. You are far from Mr. Unreliable. You are Mr. Thunder.
Once again, we are a work in progress. The key, though, is that you are the face of getting over the progress. Right now you might not agree with some of the moves Sam Presti makes or plays Billy Donovan calls, but they are only doing so thinking that it is what is best for you and the team. You staying on with the team can help continue the growth that we need.
We have watched you mature as a young man. From a former SuperSonics prospect to a now Thunder superstar. You have come so far. The franchise as come so far too, all thanks to you. We have watched you form what looks to be an amazing friendship with Russell Westbrook. Oh Russ… the magic duo that you two have created will go down as one of the best. It will become the only duo that matters for the Thunder.
This postseason journey was a fight for the team. But it is a fight that you can your teammates can be proud of because of the hard work and dedication you have for this beautiful game. You beat an amazing 67-win team in six games and came oh so close to beating a 73-win team to have a taste of the Finals. This team around you is only going to mature and grow stronger.
No matter what happens we hope you stay a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder once the season is over. We hope to watch you grow even more. We hope that in ten years it will be an easy choice to see who should be the first statue to go out in front of Chesapeake Energy Arena. We hope that statue will be you, hitting one of your signature game winning jumpers.
