Enes Kanter is arguably the best third play on the Oklahoma City Thunder. He has the 10th best Player Efficiency Rating in the entire league and continues to dominate the boards. As everyone knows the Thunder are struggling right now so that puts more and more pressure on Billy Donovan. Lately the biggest question coming to Billy Donovan is why does he chose to give the minutes to the players he does.
The major area of concern for several Thunder fans is why Steven Adams starting and getting playing time but Enes Kanter not getting that same time. Adams is a young player, slightly younger than Kanter, and he is not the most talented at offense. The one major thing Adams has over Kanter is his defensive ability and Donovan says that is why he is getting the time on the court.
“From a defensive standpoint coming down the stretch the last game, Steven, what he’s been able to do numbers-wise has been really, really good for us. I’ve said this before, but I think Enes has gotten better and really improved, but sometimes just looking at matchups on the defensive end of the floor and me making a decision on what may be the best matchup is for us defensively. And that’s all it really probably comes down to.”
Quite simply Billy Donovan believes that Kanter’s defense is too much of a liability. The Thunder have been struggling on defense enough lately and taking Adams out of the game would only make that worst. The Thunder need to find some perfect balance between the defensive powerhouse and the unstoppable postOn player.
On the bright side of things Donovan does believe that Kanter is improving on defense. He is said, “I really believe Enes continues to grow defensively and has gotten better, I think from where he was early in the year to where he is now, he continues to get better.” All fingers are crossed that Kanter can continue to improve on defense, the more he does then the more playing time he will get. If the Thunder can find a way to get Kanter on the court then they will find more success.
