The Thunder, always equipped with an arsenal that competes for an NBA championship, will head into the 2015-2016 season as ready as they have ever been. Despite always having a roster worthy of contending for a championship, the Thunder has only reached the Finals once. Bad luck has crippled the Thunder on their previous journeys to the title; obstacles such as injuries to key players, lack of experience, and even poor coaching has limited the team in the past.
However, the current team assembled by Sam Presti is as solid, and championship ready, as any he has previously put together. Here are the top 5 reasons why the Thunder will be a better team in the upcoming season:
5. Coaching Staff
In 7 years, Scott Brooks was unable to take Oklahoma City to the promised land. First time head coach Scott Brooks was handed a young and promising team, and with his help, the Thunder became a great team and a mainstay name in the NBA. Building on Scotty’s success will be tough, but if anyone can do it, it’s going to be Billy Donovan and crew.
Sam Presti took a risky step this off-season by hiring University of Florida head coach, Billy Donovan. Donovan has no previous coaching experience in the NBA, but this hasn’t been an oversight. Along with Donovan, former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams, and veteran head coach and former Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks have been added to the coaching staff. Surrounding Donovan with coaches who understand this league, and team, will be vital in Donovan’s tenure in Oklahoma City.
